The significance of these neocolonial discourses relies not solely
on their presence, but in their distance from the
Cebu contractors company narrative voice: the aphoristic
meditations are delivered with a self-conscious quality, as if the
narrator steps out of Ben's consciousness to describe something that
Ben, though aware of, does not totally comprehend. These ruptures
are similar to what Mikhail Bakhtin calls hybrid construction, or
"an utterance that belongs, by its grammatical (syntactic) and
Cebu contractors company compositional markers, to a
single speaker, but that actually contains mixed within it two
utterances, two speech manners, two styles, two 'languages,' two
semantic and axiological belief systems" (304). Hybrid construction
has two Cebu contractors company
features: first, the inclusion of "a multiplicity of 'language' and
verbal-ideological belief systems" whose meaning emerges from the
limited self-awareness of a narrator too immersed in ideology to
recognize that he speaks (metaphorically) "another's language"
(311); and, second, parodic stylization, where "official" languages
are presented as self-interested and demystified, and "incorporated
languages and socio-ideological Cebu contractors
company belief systems [...] are unmasked and destroyed
as something false, hypocritical" (312).
The Cebu contractors company aphoristic
meditations being both the language of the Filipino American
narrator and "another's language" from Spain and the US, the
examples of hybrid construction in Cebu contain a multiplicity of
discourses and share with parodic stylization the narrator's
awareness of the falsehood of an authoritative discourse.
Cebu contractors company, however, does not parody the
"official" languages and belief systems incorporated into the
narrator's own language, nor does he treat them with unsympathetic
contempt. Though delivered self-consciously, they are delivered in
earnest. These neocolonial discourses animate the interminable
identity Cebu contractors company
crises of Filipino Americans, especially those who attempt to
assimilate into the dominant white culture and, upon their failure
to do so, react with a feeling of shame. Cebu unfolds what Bacho
sees as the historically over determined trajectory of Filipino
American narratives: tragedy. He manipulates the productive dialogic
tension between these Cebu contractors company
formally spoken official discourses and the narrator's colloquial
diction to create not parody, but foreboding. |

In other words, Cebu contractors company
uses the ruptures between the narrator's language and his aphoristic
meditations to represent a neocolonial variation on the unreliable
narrator, an ambivalent subjectivity divided between being both the
written object of narrative--the Filipino American represented in
Spanish and US discourses--and the writing Cebu
contractors company subject of narrative--the Filipino
American who represents himself through these same neocolonial
discourses. Indeed, there are moments when instead of the narrator
taking up Ben's voice, the colonial discourses meant to be reflected
take control over the narrative voice. According to
Cebu contractors company in his interpretation of
Lyotard, it is as if "the one doing the speaking speaks from the
place of the referent. As narrator she is narrated as well. And in
the way she is already told, and what she herself is telling will
not undo that somewhere else she is told" (Cebu
contractors company).
